I downloaded it the evening of the 4th and as of the the 7th I had logged a good 16 hours already. At first as my friends kept talking about it, it sounded like a mindless grind session, constantly looking for materials to make things that you may or may not ever use. But even though I wasn't looking to get into a new game, between occasional bouts of Starcraft, a desire to actually finish Dragon Age, and a relapse of Fallout 3 I have plenty to do during my "free time", I figgured I would give it a try just to see what all the hype was about. While the game downloaded, all of 2 seconds, I took the time to read up on the starter guides so that when everything loaded I'd be ready to go. So the plan was: (as any MC veteran already knows, and any rookie needs to learn)

Get Wood

Get Fire

Get Shelter

Simple enough I figgured. So I log in and create my first world. I was instantly astounded by the sheer SIZE and detail of the area I had been dropped into and unfortuantely for me I forgot the cardinal rule of MC (Wood, Fire, Shelter, blah, blah, blah... ) and started exploring. I underestimated how quickly night comes, and by the time I realized it was getting dark and I hadn't made any preparations, it was too late. Zombies got me that first night.

Since then I've made 6 or 7 worlds (some with random seeds and with custom seeds, I'll share some of the cooler ones later) and I've learned my lessons. I've also joined up with some friends (the ones who got me sucked into this in fact) on their private server. I've gotten pretty good at starting up and usually by the first night I will have a nice cozy room with my Worktable, my Furnace, a bed, a chest or two an actual door, and of course a fist full of torchs.

After almost a week of playing, I keep coming to the same conclusion. This game's objectives are so simple, that when combined with the open world and the expansive crafting and building possibilities, that it is, IMHO, more addictive than any other game I have ever played. That is something coming from someone with more than 370 days of game time over 5 years in a popular MMO which I will choose to leave unnamed.
